Adventures in cycling and life

Poudre ‘xlporing

For the weekend, I wanted to go out and spend some time in the mountains. I opened up my “Poudre River/Cameron Pass” NatGeo Trail Illustrated Map and started plotting. So I packed up and headed for the hills – along with every other person in Colorado apparently as it was crowded out there (Going to the Mtns in CO is like going to the mall elsewhere in America).

Saturday was a ride up Dadd Gulch then up Crown Point Road. Surrounded by the Comanche Peaks Wilderness. 30 miles and 5k vertical in about 3:30. Bummer that some of the “trails” shown on the map were non-existent or went through wilderness areas (and were therefore closed to bikes).

A few miles of singletrack (Dadd Gulch)

A few miles of doubletrack

A ton of miles on “the wilderness highway”, Crown Point Rd. the busiest forest service dirt road known to man.

Sunday was a hike up to Island Lake in the Rawah Wilderness Area. 14 miles and 3k vert, hiking along with Japhy for 5 hours. I dont really have much to say about this hike as it was just a perfectly serene and gorgeous hike. Pictures are worth 1000 words, etc…

The panorama from a high point near Island Lake .. incredible! Click the image for a full 360ø image or check out the Interactive Version over at Dermandar (highly recommended web service for creating panoramic mosaics).
